Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

Cantwell Signs Letter Demanding Public Option

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) was one of 30 U.S. senators who  signed a letter to majority leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) today demanding that a public option be included in any health care reform bill that comes to a vote on the senate floor.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) did not sign the letter. Her office tells PubliCola:

“Senator Murray worked hard to include a public option in the bill that came out of the HELP committee, and continues to believe strongly that the public option is the best way to reduce costs, increase competition, and give families more health insurance choices. As a member of leadership who will be closely involved in the process of merging the bills, Senator Murray felt it would be  more appropriate to air her views directly with Majority Leader Reid rather than signing on to a letter.”

    after 3 decades of letting the rich pigs at the top who TAKE everything cuz they’re on top – of course, the reason they wanted to be on top is cuz they want to take everything!

    after 3 decades of kow-towing to rich pigs who were supposed to lift all boats, instead of the rich pigs blowing all the taken money on pyramids and pyramid schemes,

    pathetic patty doesn’t want to upset the rich pigs cuz the rich pigs will… take their wealth speculation skills to … Nigeria? Columbia? Peru? Brazil? Angola? Banastan?

    at least pathetic patty is being consistent.

    Good. Will send a note of support, because without a Public Option, they must vote no. Medicare payment tweaks can be a different bill. Public Option is my line in the sand, and the Dems need to grow a pair or two.
