Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Port Commissioner Creighton Accused of Harassment by Ex-Girlfriend

This story was originally posted this morning.

Seattle Port Commissioner John Creighton, who’s running unopposed for reelection, had a restraining order taken out against him earlier this year by a former girlfriend, Susan Robinet, who says she dated Creighton for four years.

The order, which required Creighton to stay 500 feet from Robinet’s workplace, residence, and school as well as Cal Anderson Park, where Robinet walks her dog, was issued on September 10 of this year. The order also restrained Creighton from “having any contact whatsoever, in person or through others, by phone, mail, or any means” with Robinet.

Robinet’s allegations are salacious and dramatic.

In her request for the order, Robinet alleges that Creighton contacted her “repeatedly” after they stopped dating, sent her “an excessive amount of texts (89 last week),” and told her he had been “pounding the 20 something receptionist” at her office. After Robinet told Creighton she had a restraining order with his name on it and told him never to contact her again, the request alleges, Creighton “threatened to come over” and continued to contact her by text and email “with statements like ‘Don’t be mad that I fucked your 2 friends,” the request alleges.

“I believe he is stalking me and I fear for my safety,” Robinet says in the request.

In a phone interview, Robinet said, “everything in the order is absolutely true.”

Creighton did not return calls to his cell phone for comment about the allegations. However, late in the afternoon, he issued the following statement:

The news reports involving myself and Susan Robinet reflect an unfortunate situation arising out of the sad end to a four year relationship. There were unbecoming, inappropriate actions by both parties during an emotionally charged time — regrettable written and verbal communications between two adults that while hurtful were never intended to harass— but most of the allegations are completely untrue, and the mutual dismissal of the petition reflects that fact.  I view this as a private matter, and it is disappointing that it is playing out in the public eye.  I am choosing to move past this matter and honor the agreement reached between the parties, even if this agreement isn’t honored in kind.

The fact that Robinet obtained a restraining order doesn’t mean the court upheld her claims as true, although her statements were made under penalty of perjury. Courts typically grant requests for restraining orders on a short-term basis to give the court time to hear the petitioner’s allegations in more detail. A temporary restraining order lasts two weeks, until the person requesting the order can have his or her claims heard by the court.

On her hearing date, Robinet requested that the petition be dismissed. She says she made a “private agreement” with Creighton, at his attorney’s request, that he would not contact her in exchange for a payment of  $5,000. “If he bothers me again, I can go right back to the court,” she says.

“Five thousand dollars is complete crap to me,” says Robinet, a real-estate agent with Windermere. “That’s my monthly expenses. If I was out to extort him I wouldn’t ask for $5,000.” Robinet says she didn’t ask for the payment, which, again, she says was suggested by Creighton’s lawyer.

PubliCola is requesting an audio recording of the hearing.

Robert Meyers, Creighton’s defense attorney, confirmed that Creighton and Robinet made a “mutual agreement that they would not contact one another,” but would not confirm the terms of the agreement. “I can’t discuss that any further,” Meyers said.

“Robinet’s allegations are salacious and dramatic.”

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, salacious means “Appealing to or stimulating sexual desire; lascivious”.

I think you were looking for the word “creepy”.

On balance, Creighton has been a good port commissioner, and I was impressed when I had the chance to work with him a few years ago.

But these accusations are serious. I guess this is one of those rare times where I will have to reserve judgment until more of the facts are in.

Sex and jealousy can drive people nuts. Sometimes they can confine it to their reptile brain and keep it away from professional/public decisionmaking (looks like Creighton has done so). And he has been a good Port commissioner, certainly better than any of the other creeps on the Port recently. I really don’t care what he does in his personal life, including behavior like this. At least he hasn’t been advertising it on a TV show like Letterman.

So you’re saying that you think that someone who in their own personal life commits an act of Domestic Violence won’t have that same line of reasoning effect his/her policy judgments?

Now I would agree with you about their own personal life concept to a point. The fact is however that when you run for office you are putting yourself out there. You aren’t just a policy-maker, you’re supposed to serve as an example. Part of that reason is you can’t get tough on if you’re one of the ones you need to be tougher on.

Hopefully, we’ll see Publicola follow-up on this article and hear both sides of it. Situations like this do effect my decision making when it comes to who I vote for. I’m not asking for perfect, but I am asking for a leader.

Dorsal: I didn’t say or mean domestic violence — which I know is referred to as domestic violence, but I’ve always thought that’s downgrading it; it is violence, period. But I admit I should have specifically excluded acts of violence.

And of course you’re putting yourself out there when you’re in political office; obviously you know that. But all I did was give my opinion. I didn’t say you or anyone else should share it. I think Creighton’s been a decent Commissioner. He’s been stupid in this particular regard and extremely emotionally hurtful to his ex-girlfriend. That will no doubt affect how voters (who learn of this) see him. But I don’t think it would necessarily affect his carrying out of his duties. Those are two separate things: voter opinion and office-holder behavior.

There is; at least in mine and other opinions, a difference between violence and domestic violence. Its not downgrading it, its putting special emphasis on it. If I were to get jumped on the street it would suck, but if I were to be emotionally or physically abused at home its sadly a situation that I feel obligated to return to.

You are entitled to your own opinion, and I respect that. I do think that we will have to agree to disagree. If in did he was emotionally hurtful to his girlfriend, I do think it can effect how he handles not only the office, but the men and WOMEN he has working with him there.

There’s no “stalker type.” You can’t tell who will do what, no matter how well you know them.

Dorsal, I understand your categorizing of violence in the home as being worse than random violence, and agree. The history of it is such that people (including the cops and physicians) used the category “domestic” as not quite as serious, i.e., just a matter of a disagreement between husband and wife. That was decades ago — when cops never made an arrest — but those of us who are old enough still remember it when we hear the phrase.

Reviewing John Creighton’s King County Democrats questionnaire, you will find he never actually says he’s a Democrat (lawyerly waffling), while noting exceptions to numerous parts of the Democratic Party platform: including his assertion that public property (the POS) should be used to advance his religious beliefs (no separation of church and state), and that right-to-work states have the right answer to labor.

The KCDCC questionnaire is used by all Democratic groups for endorsements, and every group requires potential endorsees to be actual Democrats. So, with this information clearly out there, why did so many Democrat LDs, and KCDCC, endorse this man? I blocked his endorsement at the 34th LD on the evidence in his KCDCC questionnaire. Are we not partisans?

Then look at Huffington Post and you will find he made a 3rd quarter 2008 contribution to John McCain (plus one from his father). Yet, his Democratic supporters, including the national Teamsters Union which is a primary force behind “Reform the Port”, say he is “leaning Democrat”. Oh, Right.

There is no such thing as sorta Democrat. What is wrong with you Ds out there?

Now, we learn he is a sexual stalker, as well. No wonder the Port police sex email scandal was no big deal for him.

Please–I’ve known John as a personal friend since High School and I know he would never harass anyone. If anything he was probably overly nice to her even after the breakup. He’s a man of integrity who honestly desires to always do the right thing.

This is obviously the case of a relationship gone bad and a jilted ex-lover trying to make him pay publicly for breaking up with her and moving on!

I hope she gets slapped with libel, perjury, and counter harassment claims because no woman who was an innocent victim would deliberately go to the media with the story after she agreed to a mutual settlement!

Shame on Susan Robinet for making women look bad in this situation. Most of us are mature enough to recognize if the relationship ended–there is something else better on down the line.

She needs to get a life, get therapy, move on, oh and publicly apologize to John for the lies she’s spinning because she can’t handle the fact they broke up!

    Angelfish777,

Victim bashing is never an appropriate response in a case of Domestic Violence. Do you know how many times when a well-known neighbor, or church deacon, or even a Sheriff is arrested for DV every says “it couldn’t be, its the victim’s fault”. Take a good long and close look at the Kobe Bryant rape case, not DV but an excellent example of how our society still tends to side with the male in a relationship dispute.

You may have known John for a period of time, and he may have been the nicest person in the world to you. I have meet him on a couple of occasions and he hasn’t been aggressive that I’ve seen. This is a sad situation. Sad because it took Susan four years to figure out that she deserved better. Many close to her watched her put up with mistreatment for years by a spoiled, professionally trained liar. I couldn’t be more thrilled that they have split and that this is public. Many who know her feared for her safety as she certainly knows things about him that he would not want to be public, and he is someone with the right connections and money to make her conveniently “disappear”. Trust me, if she really wanted to embarass him publicly, she could have done way more damage than this. This truly was about her safety. As for the money, it was OFFERED, and not ASKED for. We all know that a restraining order isn’t worth the paper it is written on. It wouldn’t matter if the order stood or not; he will do what he will do.

    2. My Side
    3. The truth of what really happened from an objective viewpoint

I find this pretty disturbing. I worked w/him at a law firm here in Seattle … I never would have guessed him capable of such disgraceful behavior. But having seen some of the text messages here … I wonder if he has a substance abuse problem or something. I never heard him speak out of turn or in an inappropriate manner. I guess you never can tell. I hope this will be the last we read of this, such a very public humiliation. I think he is above all this.

@ 32. JessPlier “Wow, why so nasty? Imho, gullible is believing everything you read”

It’s difficult to translate your Bush-speak, but what I think you meant to say was: Jesus hates me, that’s why I’m fat and gullible.

Actually Devilfish/ape whatever–Jesus loves you and everyone else end of story.

Port Pirate–John didn’t ask me to post comments for him–he didn’t have to. I’m a professional business women who has known him for nearly 30 years and decided to stand up for my friend in what is obviously a personal relationship gone bad that has no business in the public eye.

We’ve all written texts and emails in a moment of frustration that we’ve regretted after the fact. We’ve probably all had a broken relationship. Who hasn’t.

I think most of the King County voters are wise enough to vote for John based upon his port record and not because someone decided to be vindictive witch because he ended a relationship gone bad.

Oh and I’m very familiar with DV–having been a victim myself in the past and my mom was a DV counselor for 15 years–so I’m pretty well educated on the subject on what does/and does not constitute DV.

I’ve also known several men who were victims of DV and harassment, vindictive wives after a divorce, etc, and a woman scorned is a helluva thing to deal with. Some will stop at nothing to make the man pay for dumping her– including deliberately leaking a story to the media.

You should install a window in your stomach so you can see where you’re going with you’re head up your ass. John isn’t interested in you and will never have you – give up, go put on your tent-sized moo moo, eat a pan of brownies and go knit your dog another sweater.

ditto what nunya95 says. Being too close to this situation for several years has been more than uncomfortable at times. There are sooooooooooooo many other things about John Creighton that you don’t know and that are truly disturbing and that he has learned to hide very well. Susan Robinet is not scorned … but has truly turned a corner in her life and come out ahead. WAY ahead of where she was with John Creighton. She has been enjoying her life of late and John has proven NOT to appreciate it and has been making her suffer through his torrent of communications for months now. It was time for an end to it and everything in the accusations is TRUE and MORE … MUCH MORE. Susan had to present the court with email printouts of his emails to her prior to accepting her request for the restraining order. So there.

Interesting. Supporters on the Creighton side have witnessed equally horrific behavior by Robinet, so I guess we’ll never know for sure who really instigated this mess. I’d bet my money that both parties have an equal share in the matter. Either way I hope they’re both able to move on.

#29 AngelFish, I think you are being told some bad information. I’ve been dating Susan for almost 2 months now, and I actually saw all the messages in Sep. saying he’s still in love with her — pretty bold of you to make such harsh accusations blindly.

    @JessPlier
If you are talking about the time I caught you in bed with my boyfriend 2 yrs ago, then yes, my reaction was deservedly horrific. Do you have anything else? Or are you just another one of his puppets? He is extremely persuasive, as most lawyers are…

I’m not the person you mention, but I do apologize for and recant any comments above that might have been leaning towards support of John Creighton. I strongly believe that he displays symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Without a doubt he comes off as exceptionally nice, but scratch the surface and he is an unscrupulous liar and manipulator with no regard for others except for himself. Almost impossible to believe, but entirely true. His behind-the-scenes behaviour is shocking, and it is truly concerning that he has been elected to public office. Can the public call for a mental health exam?

I asked publicola a few times if they could remove my post above but they did not respond. It was an overly dramatic reaction to what turned out to be certifiable gossip. Apologies, Creighton! Glad it looks like he has risen above this media rodeo.
