Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Licata Cashes In

Perhaps it’s in response to his opponent Jessie Israel’s folk rock YouTube video (which we posted here).

In a campaign YouTube of his own, incumbent city council member Nick Licata does his best Johnny Cash:

Best lines: He rhymes “sidewalks, please!” with “niceties,” and he takes a swipe at council member Jean Godden for being a status quo Pollyanna. (Earlier in the campaign, Godden took the unusual step of endorsing Israel over her council colleague Licata.)

One doth protest moment: Licata croons: “Some say three terms might be enough, but the work for the common good won’t let up.”

Back when he was an activist in the late 1980s, Licata led an effort for council term limits and reportedly said council members who served more than three terms become lazy, bored, and unimaginitive.

Wow. That video proves that his performance skills are surpassed only by his ability to get 5 votes at Council.

Ouch. I’m going to vote for Nick but not based on this atrocity.

Don’t quit your day job… actually, do just that.

“Well, there’s things that never will be right I know,

And things need changin’ everywhere you go,

’til we start to make a move to make a few things right,

You wont see me voting for Nick in two fortnights.”

Just one quick observation – Nick and I originally performed this at the Washington Bus event at the Showbox, so I’d say that the vid from Israel’s folks was actually probably a take on that (not that it matters much either way).

Ya’, Trevor is right, find out why the Council issue a press release saying they were ready, and Licata says he isn’t ready.
Why is the Tranportation sub-committee, that Licata is not a member of, that has been working on this for a few months, going to keep going, when Nick Licata is worried that the pramanade might not be fully funded.

Stop, everybody, Nick is not ready.

He is just dragging his feet, he not saying “no”, and would not want his opponent to label him an obstructionist (she doesn’t have to, he does that with his actions).

How long should we wait for Nick to catch up to the “best opportunity”?

On the May 27, 2009 edition of City Inside Out: Council Edition, Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata, a longtime opponent of replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel, said, “I’ve never been a big fan of the bored tunnel but if they are going to do it-this might be the best opportunity.”.

Imagin if all 500 stupid remarks were ctegorized somewhere, and the second you did anything that might resemble an adjustment in attitude 20 years later, one of those remarks was pulled out and spashed on the front page.

Thanks to the interwebs, in 10 years, no one will be qualified to do anything, because they said something dumb on their Facebook page. Or, perhaps by then, it just won’t matter.

How’s the research going on that “blowing a red light w/out a license” thingy? Did you write McGinn’s press release response yet, so you can then write the actual article?

Gosh golly, gee whiz, Trevor, I just wanted to share what Nick has already said so we are not all subject to blind repeating of press releases that plague instant media.

You never know, the (political) wind could shift, and so will he.

12, imagine somebody issuing a press release second-guessing the motivations of the mayor, implying it was just political, and in the same release he flip-flops on that very issue. The hypocracy makes me want to barf.

@15: So far, all McGinn seems to do is issue press releases on e-mail talking smack. How much staff does it take to send out a couple of .pdf files in a day, anyhow? Sounds like some serious grassroots stuff right there.
