Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

It's Not Fair to Blame One Player, but …

Lots of disappointing things about our 2-1 loss to New England yesterday. However, I’ve already ranted about MLS reffing, so I’ll keep mum on that bullshit handball PK call and just add it to the tally of unprofessional officiating.

I also like Riley too much to hold his feet to the fire about Sharlie Joseph, keeping him onsides for his game winning goal.

My bone this week is the fact that we were playing with 10 men. I don’t like to single people out, but I think it’s warranted today.  Nothing personal Brad Evans, but where were you Saturday night?

I never once saw you touch the ball, make a play, or hear your name called out by the announcers.

And I was watching you intently.  I started focusing on you intensely (I was drunk) at about minute 35 or so, when I realized you were the weak link on the team. Nothing.

I’m sure you’re a nice guy; you kinda look like Luke Skywalker. But I could never figure out why you were called up by the nats, and I don’t know why you started tonight.

It’s not fair to blame one single player on any loss. But Jaqua, after spending the last few matches on the bench, came out fighting for his starting position.  He made some gaffes, but hustled more so. Levesque’s second-half substitution had little impact, but he hustled.  Zakauni hustled.  Montero hustled.  Everyone hustled.  Except Evans.

Sigi, what are you thinking?

We’ve dropped from 3rd in the West to fifth, from 5th in the playoffs to 7th. Next week we play in Columbus, where a tie will be miraculous.  Maybe those 7 points will be more difficult than thought.

Evans might have been invisible, but Jaqua was the one giving up the ball left and right. The entire team was completely flat yesterday and if it weren’t for a skilled/lucky shot by Montero, the game would have been a complete blowout.

Also, since you’re talking about refs… Check out this image of Joseph’s winning goal:

Joseph is completely on the left side of the 10-yard line, every Sounder defender is on the right side. Oops.

Thanks for the photo, Bobblehead. That’s… well, what can I say? After the first PK… sigh.

Yes, overall the team was flat, but I’d rather notice someone was flat than not notice anyone at all.

  • Good Grief

The reffing in the MLS is frustrating, but I thought that guy actually did a good job. Unlike so many other matches, the game did not deteriorate into a series of Yellow and Red Cards — he managed to keep control the way he was meant to — by officiating, not just handing out countless cautions.

As for the PK call — well, that was a tough one. I have to say that if the situation was reversed and it hadn’t been called, I suspect a lot of Sounders fans would be looking for their pitchforks and torches last night…

I have had the same thoughts about Evans since his return from national team duty. Is he injured? Is he burned out? Something changed with him and not for the better.

The real problem with our expansion run is a lack of depth. We do not have the midfield or forward substitutes that can fill in and really make the difference right now.

Clarification: I wasn’t drunk, the original line was “so as not to appear a hyperbolic drunk…”. I was completely sober during the game and my assessment of Evans.

I just wanted you to know.

Brad Evans played Saturday?!? He couldn’t have been more invisible if he tried. I’m glad you didn’t see the same thing I didn’t see.

Also I love Riley but wanted to strangle him on the second goal when he’s standing there with his hands spread wide looking back at the assistant referee appealing for off sides when he clearly was the inattentive reason Joseph was legal.
