Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Extra Fizz: Campaign Money Update

Ed. Note: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Susan Hutchison has raised $78,000 since the primary, not $56,000.

The latest campaign finance reports show that King County Executive candidate Dow Constantine has continued to out-raise his opponent, former KIRO anchor and frequent Republican donor Susan Hutchison, by more than two to one. In the last week, Constantine reported raising around $48,000 to Hutchison’s $22,000, bringing his total since the August 18 primary election to $181,000 (to Hutchison’s $78,000).

Among city council candidates, Position 8 contender Robert Rosencrantz has raised far more than all the others, reporting $32,000 in contributions since the primary. (His opponent, Mike O’Brien, has raised just $8,000).

Meanwhile, last-place mayoral finisher Norman Sigler sent out a press release this morning to announce that he’s seeking reimbursement of the $1,666.62 filing fee his campaign paid to King County Elections in June. According to Sigler’s statement, his campaign “is seeking reimbursement of the [filing fee because] we originally submitted signatures but came up short by 51. We were understandably upset and had not budgeted the filing fee amount.”

Sigler also alludes to a potential future campaign, noting that although “I was a little upset at the lack of coverage of my campaign (and others) by most of the media,” that “was not your fault. Our campaign did not give you enough ‘news worthy’ material to work with.”

What’s amazing to me is how much we talk about the money in these races, but in a King County wide race, $200K is nothing, and no where near sufficient to persuade significant voters in a general election.

So Dow has about $150k on hand, as does Susan, right?

I heard a little media snippet about Sigler’s interest in Seattle engaging North Korea in direct talks. That was more than enough. Considering Sigler’s endorsement of Mallahan, I was hoping that policy position was going to be added to the Mallahan for Mayor campaign platform?

@3 So true. The difference in money raised between the two candidates mean very little. The totals are what is significant: they are having a tough time raising cash. No doubt there will be independent expenditures for Constantine. WIll Hutchison have any? The ability to reach a county the size of an east coast state depends on money. McGinn and Mallahan may be able to run around Seattle fueled largely by coffee but Dow and Susan will need to hit the airwaves.

the real story this year is that fundraising is WAY down in every race. having a little $30K advantage ina city race is nothing now that the interweb and social networking provide so much information.

Thank you Seattle resident. Engagement with people who don’t like us is key. Thanks also to the 1246 people who voted for me. I will be back.

Regarding my seeking reimbursement for the filing fee: the fee is 1% of the salary for the position. The fee was calculated based on the budgeted salary a of Feb09. The mayor in Mar09 announced he and others would not receive their ’09 COLA of 4.5% thus reducing his pay. Had the city provided King Co with the new salary, our campaign would have had enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot in lieu of the fee. I want to recognize the hard work of my team who gathered the signatures and keep my campaign in the black.

    Thanks for the press Publicola.
