Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Extra Fizz: Mallahan Announces Impressive Advisory Committee

Joe Mallahan just announced a new advisory committee for his campaign. And while his opponents in the Mike McGinn camp somehow got some early details (Chamber of Commerce chair Tayloe Washburn) and leaked it yesterday, the list is impressive and newsworthy.

In addition to Washburn the list also includes social-justice activists, advocates for the homeless, current and former city and state officials, and public-safety advocates.

The only category that’s notably absent from Mallahan’s list: Prominent environmental leaders, most of whom (the Cascade Bicycle Club; the Sierra Club; members of the Transportation Choices Coalition) are supporting McGinn.

On the list:

Bob Santos, former ED of Inter*im and a longtime civil rights and housing advocate;

Rich O’Neill, president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild (the local police union, which endorsed Mallahan earlier this year);

Kenny Stuart, president of the Seattle Firefighters Union, which also endorsed Mallahan;

Tina Podlodowski, former Seattle City Council member and head of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Puget Sound;

Michael DeBell, president of the Seattle school board;

Dean Nielsen, regional director of Progressive Majority and a prominent local Democrat;

Bill Block, project director of the King County Committee to End Homelessness;

Judy Clibborn, chair of the state House Transportation Committee and a supporter of the proposed waterfront tunnel (which Mallahan supports and McGinn opposes);

Bob Donegan, a waterfront business owner, who also supports the tunnel;

and Karen Daubert, president of the Seattle Parks Foundation, among others.

    Not surprised that the Tunnel People are supporting Mallahan — and this list seems to be more of them than social justice advocates.

    Well, it’s not quite all the king’s horses and all the king’s men, but it’s a nice list.

    What will this list DO? Besides be impressive?

    Judy Clibborn! Not only is she a supporter of the tunnel, she’s the road queen extraordinaire. Not to mention a stooge for BIAW. She spent much of last legislative session trying to shut down light rail to the Eastside, she made sure that Seattle got no stimulus money and she’s opposed to state funding for transit. The last person a Seattle pol should be taking counsel on transportation from is Judy Clibborn. Way to go Joe.

    Oh, and is any bothered by the fact that Tayloe Washburn, Judy Clibborn and who knows who else from this advisory group don’t even live in Seattle? Joe is clearly the suburban candidate for mayor. That’d be great if Seattle was a suburb.

    “advisory committee” is what they are, in list form is how it was communicated to you.

    The list will now vanish from my phone, but the advisory committee will still keep advising.

    What are they advising him to do, or not do, is my question.

  • go Joe go

    @3- yes we should pretend that we don’t have to plan transportation regionally with anyone like olympia or tacoma or the suburban cities. Seattle can solve all its problems by itself. We’ve done such an amazing job to date.

    As McGinn had the chance to say at the 43rd Dems endorsement meeting last week, it’s one thing to have the support of the insiders; it’s another to have the support of the people.

  • Timothy

    @5…still, @3′s point stands. Judy Clibborn is no friend of Seattle relative to transportation issues.

    I’ll repeat again, because as much as others like to charge McGinn with delusion, the Tunnel is a delusional proposition that will never, ever be built. And, Judy Clibborn is in the lead in propagating the delusion.

    The local press has to begin debunking the storyline that McGinn will stop the tunnel, and begin asking real questions about the tunnel itself.

    I don’t think there’s much that is surprising on this list. Tayloe Washburn has been peddling direct misinformation about the tunnel project (e.g. that the Stakeholders group made a final recommendation against Transit and Streets and For the Tunnel; never happened, Tayloe, and you know it).

    But, what troubles me in this election is cynicism that it takes to support Mallahan, when he has no record on anything; it’s such a transparent ploy to buy the empty suit, to get him to be your guy, and Mallahan has shown he’s willing to be bought and sold. For many in Seattle politics, that’s what counts.

    And, that’s distasteful.

    @5: Judy Clibborn has proven that she has no interest in supporting Seattle’s transportation needs. It’d be one thing if she had just ignored those needs. Instead she’s actively worked against them. And based on his KUOW interview, it seems that Mallahan has no clue as to what the city’s interests even are.

    BTW, I’m not even opposed to the tunnel. I kinda like it. But it seems like every day I hear something new about Mallahan’s cluelessness on transportation and his willingness to sell out our interests and take us backwards.

    Joe’s their man. This is a group that likes to own their candidates, and Joe’s their man.

    What I’d like to hear is whether any of them can make a coherent case for SUPPORTING Mallahan, and not just for supporting the tunnel. Seriously, upon what do these people base their support?

    @10 – Are you calling Bob Donegan (owner of Ivars) a transportation adviser? Because other than Jared Smith he’s the only other person on that list who’s even remotely connected to any sort of transportation decision.

    Impressive list. Only problem all of them are more qualified to be mayor then Mallahan and come to think of it, McGinn too.

    @11: On what do they base their support? On the fact that he will do what they tell him.

    And he needs someone to tell him, as he knows nothing, and he seems to recognize that he knows nothing. He’s the perfect candidate to tell what to do. A suit in pursuit of someone to wear it.

    The only elected official on the list is Michael DeBell, president of the School Board. Given that the mayor has no control over schools, I wonder what advice Mr. DeBell will be giving Mr. Mallahan.

    I’m reminded of this Publicola post http://publicola.net/?p=11303.

    Best quote from Clibborn:
    Clibborn said that people who come to Olympia seeking gas-tax funding for new transit projects “are probably going to get a cold shoulder,” because the state has already set its priorities, and those priorities are centered on roads.
