Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Extra Fizz: Stranger Loses Well-Sourced Crime Reporter

Yesterday afternoon, The Stranger decided to give Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, the paper’s well-sourced crime reporter, his walking papers.

Jonah, who has the chops of a hard-boiled 1940s reporter with one of those over-sized “Press” cards leaning crookedly in his fedora, is actually an amiable, young hip-hop dude. It just so happens he has a talent for charming confidential police reports out of reluctant desk sergeants and vice cops.

Full disclosure: I was Jonah’s editor for over a year at the Stranger. I still remember when Jonah managed to get hold of a teen prostitute’s “John” book and started dialing numbers that the SPD, who’d also seen the book, never bothered to call. Jonah interviewed “Johns” who’d had sex with the teen and filed a story on the SPD’s lackadaisical approach to prosecuting men when it comes to underage prostitution. For Jonah, it just was another bit of routine undercover reporting.

His last post on the Stranger’s Slog yesterday was (as usual) a  scoop on an SPD arrest in the high-profile string of armed robberies in North Seattle.

Earlier in the week, Jonah trashed mayoral candidate Mike McGinn for being MIA on crime issues.

I’ve asked the Stranger for a comment, and I’ll let you know what they say.

Update: Stranger editorial director Dan Savage would not comment.

Jonah’s article in this week’s printed edition is also really good. There aren’t many reporters who sit down to interview a gang member.

Jonah is highly respected by folks in neighborhoods, City departments, at City Hall and beyond. He is professional, smart, extremely funny and, most importantly, has integrity.

This is a sad day for the Stranger readers. We will all be waiting to see what luck group benefits from the Stranger’s unfortunate decision.

Simply put, Jonah is top-notch. His stories were relevant and his coverage in-depth. There is a reason Jonah is a favorite of so many.

The Stranger’s loss is really a loss for all of us.

Jonah has done great coverage for the Stranger, breaking news and covering many of the issues that go otherwise ignored. This decision is bizarre and I don’t understand what the top dogs at the Stranger are thinking. More than anything, I really hope Jonah can find a way to keep reporting at a time when reporting jobs are becoming a scarce commodity.

I frequently disagreed with Jonah’s take on issues (especially when he did uncritical reporting on SPOG’s contract negotiations), but the man had the right instincts, and I don’t see anyone replacing him anytime soon.

By right instincts, I mean he actually bothered to interview the victims of police brutality instead of merely writing about what politicians said about them. That was enough to garner numerous scoops during the season of revelations a couple years ago about the SPD’s failure to discipline its own for violating people’s civil rights. That was really important work.

I don’t at all agree that Jonah did uncritical reporting on SPOG negotiaitons. As a person working on improving police accountability policy in Seattle, I believe that Jonah’s reporting on the SPOG influence on police accountability policy, as well as the limits created by labor law designed to protect workers over accountability to the public, has done a great service towards advancing a broader understanding in the community of the complexity of those issues.

When I moved here several years ago, I quickly learned that the best city reporting was done by The Stranger. Now … what happened? There is less and less information in that paper, and the quality of the writing has declined.

Also, I think this confirms that the Stranger’s moving away from covering news, towards op/ed fluff and outright agenda-driven propaganda. I mean, they’ve always had that vibe, but previously they had actual reporters to give them some credibility.

Now with Jonah gone, they’ve got Eli Sanders, whose writing is 90% personal bias and 10% objective facts, and that two-note activist gas can Dominic Holden. Oh, and Savage, but he’s all op/ed these days, and I guess now his paper is all op/ed too. Two years ago, you could cite The Stranger with some degree of credibility. I used to joke that the paper was a color-page equivalent of Eat The State!, though it had enough meat to its coverage to ultimately prove more than that.

    That’s not a joke anymore.

Maybe he wanted the job, and pitched a fit when he didn’t get it? Or Dan told him he couldn’t post about the Seahawks on Slog anymore?

I have met several of the staff casually and socially (and Erica and Josh as well) but don’t speak to or even email any of them regularly and certainly have no inside information. My relationship with The Strangler is almost entirely public, in the comments of Slog. What you see is what you get.

Ironically, my most recent communication with a Stranger staffer was with Jonah, when I was trying to goad him into knocking my block off over the Sounders (whom he pretends to hate).

  • Facts about crime in Seattle

Blacks make up only 8% of Seattle, but over half the murders in 2008 in Seattle were committed by blacks.

So far, for 2009, blacks are probably running a solid 80% of the murders here.

Obviously Seattle needs more blacks to come live there so it can truly be a world-class city.
