Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

House Formally Rebukes Wilson

jwilson01The House formally admonished Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) for his outburst last week during President O’s Joint Congressional speech.

The resolution of disapproval was a simple, one sentence statement, introduced by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and states: “that the House of Representatives disapproves of the behavior of the Representative from South Carolina, Mr. Wilson, during the joint session of Congress held on September 9, 2009.”

The resolution passed 240-179.

Now, that that’s over.  How about health care?

UPDATE: The roll call has been posted.  Shocker:  Guess who voted “nay?”  Lefty liberal Rep. Jim McDermott (D-7, WA).  He joins his Republican colleagues Reps. Hastings, Reichert and McMorris Rodgers.

When I called Congressman McDermott’s office to inquire why he voted “Nay,” the front desk seemed a little surprised at the vote.  His DC office is closed so maybe we’ll get more of an idea why McDermott sided with his Republican colleagues on this resolution tomorrow.

it was two whereas statements and a one sentence resolution expressing disapproval; you’ve quoted from the whereas part of it, isntead of the resolved part of it.

The dozen Democratic nays are an interesting assortment from left, right, and center.

Jim’s not the only leftie in the group — Kucinich, Maurice Hinchey, Eric Massa, and Gwen Moore join McDermott in the Progressive Caucus. But there are also a number of Blue Dogs — Mike Arcuri, Gaby Giffords, and Gene Taylor. The other four — Bill Delahunt, Paul Hodes, Dan Maffei, and Harry Teague (in approximate left-to-right order) — aren’t in either of those groups.

Oh, forgot to mention that progressive Barney Frank was among the five Dems voting present. And progressives Nydia Velazquez and Maxine Waters joined Blue Dog John Tanner, three other Dems, and four Reepublicans who missed the vote.

    FWIW, Joe Wilson voted nay.

McDermott and Wilson co-chair a subcommittee on India. Barney Frank said he was too busy to monitor others behavior. Kucinich probably liked his position on a woman’s right to choose.

Can we have Congressmen start shooting at each other on the floor of the House again like in the old days? That might improve the quality of debate.
