Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Mallahan to Get Police and Firefighters Endorsements

The Seattle Times reports :

Seattle’s firefighter and police unions will announce their endorsement of Joe Mallahan for mayor at a news conference Tuesday.

Seattle Fire Fighters Union Local 27 president Kenny Stuart said his union’s leaders interviewed both Mallahan and his opponent Mike McGinn and found Mallahan "was far and away the best candidate for labor and public safety." He said Mallahan quickly grasped the issues important to firefighters and promised to ensure they have the resources needed to do their jobs.

This is why Murray taking two weeks to mull it over is a disastrous decision.

In this two week period Mallahan will call up every single Nickels endorser and donor, so Murray’s really missing his window of opportunity. Murray did the poll; the rest is a huge gut check for him; what data or information could he possibly get in two weeks that would outweigh the disadvantage of not being in the game?

    Prediction: he’s a no go.

Or, Murray is contacting the sane groups and this announcement is that group giving their answer.
I went to the union web site, they are planning endorsements September 10, 2009, not next Tuesday.
Maybe Murray is forcing the issue with these groups.

    Political Endorsement Meeting
    NOTICE OF POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT
    Meeting Date:                       September 10th, 2009
    Meeting Time:                       0900
    Location:                                Local 27
The Political Action Committee may recommend endorsement(s) at this meeting. You may contact Local 27 prior to the meeting to confirm whether or not endorsement recommendations will be made.

These might be a good questions for a reporter to ask on Tuesday, did they include Murray in their possible candidates? If not, why not? If so, your site says 9/10/09 is when you planned to announce endorsements, did Murray’s potential run contribute to the timing of this announcement?

Murray has screwed labor repeatedly in Olympia. it is no surprise that police and fire unions are backing Mallahan. Murray pays lip service to everyone, but in the end he ALWAYS just does what is best for himself. He has an enormous ego and is a political opportunist. Why would we want Murray– a career politicain with no executive experience– trying to run our city!

Yep, that would explain why labor funded a Murray poll and is asking him to run.

Accepting an endorsement from the SPOG is an admission that one will let the SPD continue with their rougue policies without criticism.

@ 5: More important is who SPOG endorses for City Attorney. If you want a check on rogue officers, vote Pete Holmes. A mayoral candidate would be a fool to turn down an endorsement from the police guild.
