Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

How the Council Survivors Stack Up

Position 8 candidate Robert Rosencrantz

Position 8 candidate Robert Rosencrantz

In the waning days of the primary election campaign, city council candidates spent money frantically in an effort to stand out of the (often very large) pack with voters. In some cases, candidates emptied out their bank accounts in a last-ditch attempt to win, leaving those who made it through with badly diminished campaign coffers.

In some races, the candidates’ spending balances out, leaving both candidates at around the same level as they go into the general. (See: Position 8 contenders Mike O’Brien and Robert Rosencrantz.) In others, one candidate earned more, spent less, or otherwise managed to salvage more than their opponent, giving them a financial advantage going into November (see: Position 4 candidate Sally Bagshaw, with tens of thousands in the bank, and her opponent David Bloom, in the red).

Below the jump,  a look at the winners—and their bank accounts.

Did any of the wacko candidates who simply want to tear down the viaduct & let the city choke on traffic break above even 30% of the vote?

I’m just askin’ , McGinn & Rosencrantz are 2 flakes that stick out in my mind

Actually, now that the primary is over, the “Choke the City” junta can reveal its true agenda: We not only want tear down the viaduct, but we’ll also be stitching comfy bike-helmet cozies from the scalps of our enemies.

You’re first on our hunting list, chicagoexpat!

    @2,

I assume you’re bending the truth trying to make a point – because no one is talking about “tear[ing] down the viaduct & let[ing] the city choke on traffic.”

See, there’s this freeway through the center of the city called Interstate 5. And there are roads called Alaskan Way, 2nd Ave., 4th Ave., etc. For hundreds of millions (a billion-plus?) less than a tunnel, you can improve these _and_ add transit to carry the trips, and there will be no choking.

I-5/surface/transit is the fiscally conservative option.

Dude, human skin bike helmet cozies! Send me one!

I’ll send you instructions for the blood-soaked ritual you have to perform to join our Movement, asdfgh. You’ll need to sacrifice a single-car driver, of course…

Anyone who has the slightest background in transportation theory knows that fewer roads mean less traffic – and better decision making by travelers.

    http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/0712/0712.1598v4.pdf

Moreover, choking on cars would require blocking one’s airway with them (probably not good for one’s longevity). Now that I think about it, maybe cars should come with a warning label stating that; Overreliance on this instrument is known to increase the likelihood of disease and/or death.

Until then, try not putting cars in your mouth.

It would be great to link back to all the winners’ Q and A pages (maybe on the left sidebar), unless you’re going to interview them all again. I hope you do interview the mayoral candidates again.

evil devils wagon MUST be banned if we are ever going to get stupid voters to all start biking to work & to vote the right way on every issue…
the old & disabled will be sent to “special” camps to figure out how to keep them away from view, since they can’t be morally right like the good thinking people!
