Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

PubliCola Contest!

Earlier this week, we announced that we’re having a contest: Make a 30 second campaign ad (for or against the candidate of your choice) and send it to me josh@publicola.net. Our panel of experts, including some hot shot campaign consultant types we know, will take a look at the ads and choose the best ones. We’re still working out the prizes. Stay tuned.

In the mean time, tune into this. Someone named Charlie sent me this last night (at 3:16am):

Since Publicola is soliciting reader videos about their favorite or least favorite candidates, I thought you *might* like this short cartoon. It’s a 30 second ‘recap’ of the mayoral primary race up until this point.

Posted on Publicola. I have arrived my darlings.

Or maybe this just represents my last stop on the way to crazytown. Still, you gotta admit, that bunny Mallahan is pretty adorable. He’s got such a sweet managerial temperament. And he’s nibbling on money to keep himself strong.

Thanks for the praise Vinny and pl.

@3 Mcginn is actually eating grassroots, which seems favorable at first, but it’s unclear whether his plot can actually sustain him or whether it’s just a yard wide and a mile deep. Mallahan’s silos on the other hand are still pretty plump.

And Jan Drago would be leeching off Nickels if it was worth the animating effort.

@6 No I suppose she’s not. Of course, that’s not exactly unprecedented. Nickels is the only one who is donning pants. I suppose McGinn and Mallahan are more animal-like, but Drago is supposed to be a mink (her hair has always looked water repellant to me). Still I can see now why her lack of pants, somewhat normal fleshtone and position on Nickels’s shoulders warrants a few question marks.
