Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

McGinn in Lead. Mallahan in Second. Nickels in Third

Josh here.

McGinn 27. Mallahan 26. Nickels 25. It is deadly quiet here at the Nickels party. All I got when I confirmed the numbers with Team Nickels campaign manager Viet Shelton was: “Yep.”

Meanwhile, in the King County Executive’s race Susan Hutchison is at 37 percent and Dow Constantine is at 22 percent, far ahead of the others.

That news bumped my original post:

It’s getting a bit more crowded. Maybe it’s that it’s so far away from…from…

I don’t know, but we’re out here in the 5000 block of 1st Ave. S.

I asked Team Nickels why we were so far away, and they (spokesman Sandeep Kaushik) said “because UFCW is here.” Nickels staff counsel, Regina LaBelle added, “there’s only one union restaurant in Seattle. The Athenian.”

(Does that mean all the other candidates are not union spots?)

Wait…Seattle Transportation Department head Grace Crunican just walked in. You know. The one who Nickels’ opponent Joe Mallahan says he’ll fire if he gets elected. I asked her if she had anything to say to Mallahan.

“I don’t have to respond to him,” she said.

It’s Mallahan 26, not 36. Unless you got leaked election results from a source other than KC Elections.

So are you trying to tell me that Slim Nickels doesn’t go to any non-union restaurants? In any event, UFCW is not the union that would represent restaurant workers in the first place.

As I pondered earlier today, I wonder what a lame-duck Nickels administration is going to be like.

Ironically, another Union spot in Seattle is the Edgewater, where Hutchison is having her party. Maybe Regina could go there to look for a job later tonight, probably a better chance to get one than where she is now.

So really it’s a toss up, right? Any combination of those three could go through and it’s starting to look more and more like we won’t know for several days…

@6 i think it’s worse than that for Nickels. The polling & sentiment indicators suggest that Nickels was going nowhere or even down at the end while McGinn & Mallahan (god forbid) were surging. I’d bet that today’s results are the high-water mark for Nickels. McGinn is likely to come out barely on top, Mallahan a close second, Nickels third. Looks like an interesting & weird race in the general, with Nickels a lame-duck wildcard.

What’s up with those port races though? Is there some great reservoir of animosity for Max Vekich that I’m not aware of? Why’s he doing so much worse than Holland?

So very interesting — Nickels is actually a decent manager — I know let the boo’s begin — but the man actually took an unresponsive bureaucracy and set the conditions for a lot of success. Previously, each department acted as their own kingdom, with City Council members dipping into their realms to act as lords and ladies. Nickels set a new standard and rebalanced governance — the mayor administer’s — the council set’s policy — it is the way it should be. Now, with a new mayor coming in (not saying that is bad) you will see the council trying to re-establish feudal control and the city as a whole will be worse for the ware….One area Nickels did fail was he did not broaden his core set of advisors — group think set in and it hampered his ability to see the details which make or break a big city mayor. I mean come on — have you ever met Viet Shelton? The guy is a child — the Mayor and Ceis appointing him as campaign manager goes to show either their heart was not into this race, or they did not take the threat of a credible challenger seriously. There will always be time to reflect in the future….

How flippin’ embarrassing, Publicola. Your numbers are all f-ed up. Mallahan has 26, not 36. And we don’t need newspapers (and, presumably, editors?) any more?
