Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

GEICO thinks Glenn Beck is a Fuckwit too!

Sorry to all my beloved fans for the lag in posting recently.  I just got back from NYC where I did a kickass interview for Rolling Stone with Michael Moore, David Gergen and Paul Krugman where we all opined about how Obama is doing. The interview itself was kickass but the resulting story sucked. So, I am busily reconstructing it, and I will have a deconstruction later this week.

For the time being, I shall provide you an ObamaNerd quickie—no mess, done in 3 minutes and leaving you feeling totally satisfied.

Great news!  People are now finally beginning to realize that Glenn Beck of FoxNews’ “The Glenn Beck Program” is a total hate-spewing fuckwit.

Glenn Beck. Totally Boycottable.

Here’s the drama recap:  Glenn Beck said in a July 28 show of  “Fox and Friends” that as a result of his comments on the Gates’ controversy, Barack Obama has a deep-seated hatred of White People  (um, newsflash Beck: Obama likes this white person A LOT).  He goes on further to call Obama a “racist.”  Hey, that tooootally worked for Sonia Sotomayor. Let’s try that with our totally awesome and historic THE President.

Well, some people don’t take too kindly to the combination of hate speech and fuck-wittery.  And liberals aren’t ones to just sit around and bitch on blogs all day. Oh no. There’s actually some organization, a notable backlash and a threatened boycott.  Remember when boycotts were just for right wingers who hate the Dixie Chicks?  No more!  Lefties now have boycott game.  You go girl.

The result of such lefty efforts?  GEICO, Progressive Insurance, Men’s Wearhouse, Sargento and Proctor and Gamble have all started yanking their ad dollars.  FYI: GEICO spends about $1 billion a quarter on advertising.  Ouchie!

If you care to join the effort to pull advertising dollars from that total moronic fuckwit, Glenn Beck, go here.

Oh, and for all you people rioting at the healthcare town halls. Go get some mental health care. Oh wait, your insurance probably doesn’t cover that.

The most sane yet still vocal anti-health care picketers at the 34th town hall meeting with Rep. McDermott were on Medicare. Awesome! Next to him, we had the LaRouche people. It’s like VH-1, but live and sometimes less douchy.

I did see a clearly naive, old skinny white guy think it safe to rip up a black woman’s poster of Rosa Parks at Senator McCaskill’s health care forum. Those cops jumping in simply have to be a form of public health insurance, which he opposes.
