Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Nickels Goes on the Attack Against Mallahan

As anticipated in Morning Fizz on Monday , Mayor Greg Nickels has gone on the offensive against challenger Joe Mallahan, with a tough new video attacking Mallahan as being unprepared to serve as mayor.

The YouTube video (which isn’t slated for TV) is  titled "Joe Don’t Know Jack" and accuses Mallahan of being ignorant on issues like how Seattle’s stadium tax works; the fact that tax increment financing is illegal in Washington State; the amount the city spends on senior services; and the fact that the city’s bike lanes aren’t painted with toxic paint. "Joe doesn’t know that he didn’t bother to vote in six elections for mayor, city council, and governor," the video concludes. "Poor Joe. There’s so much he doesn’t know."

It’s a pretty devastating video. It’s also a risky move—an unpopular incumbent attacking a political unknown (and thereby raising his profile, something I noted about Nickels’ attacks on challenger Mike McGinn yesterday .) One reason Nickels may be willing to take the risk: Mallahan reportedly has a poll in the field that shows him a point or two ahead of the incumbent.

    At last someone said it.

I’m by no means a Nickels fan, but he’s spot on here.

Yes, I am going to say this, kudos Greg Nickels. Since the media has completely fallen down on the job, it’s great to see Nickels put the smackdown on this completely unqualified candidate. Somewhere McGinn is laughing with joy.

Hat tip to Nickels. Video says everything I’ve been thinking. There’s so much-TOO much- that Joe doesn’t know.

I support McGinn and find this type of stuff totally disgusting. How desperate. First it was attacks on McGinn and now Mallahan. Guess someone is clawing their way to 3rd place. I want McGinn to win, but would vote for Mallahan in a heartbeat if it was Mallahan and Nickels in the general. This is exactly the way he’s been running city hall. Anybody buy Nickels! Go McGinn!

  • Jeralyn

That about covers it. Nickels is getting desperate, it seems.

A very desperate move on the part of Nickels.

ECBs analysis is correct, “It’s also a risky move—an unpopular incumbent attacking a political unknown (and thereby raising his profile …”

    This isn’t going to work.

This video reminds me of the end of the fireworks display on July 4th– Nickels is throwing everything he’s got. All in all, I’d say this week feels like Nickels’ finale. Ooh and ahh away, spectators. The show is almost over.

  • clerk

Yeah, risky to say the least.

Going after someone on issues the public buys off on is one thing (snowstorm response), but going scattershot with a ton of different issues that the general public will have no idea about — that’s why this video isn’t destined for TV.

Smells like Nickels doesn’t want to go out with money in the bank, or anything sitting on the shelf.

This video is great..ha ha ha way to go greg. Spot on, and those of you criticizing this attack – that is what Mallahan has been relying on since day one. Greg’s attacks will just be better.

I agree about this being both risky and disgusting, but did we really expect anything else out of a desperate Nickels campaign? I was undecided on this race for a while, but one thing I was completely certain of was that Nickels leadership style is an obstacle to progress in the city of Seattle. I hope this comes back to bite him in his giant, divisive arse!

Ha ha lighten up – this video is pretty funny and also true. Why is it ok for all the other challengers to attack him but he’s not allowed to point out the obvious? Well done, and honestly he could have been a lot meaner to Mallahan.

Nickel’s has been positive so far – telling the public his vision for the city while his opponents have relied on potshots and attacks. He’s biting back a bit but has been nowhere as vicious as Drago, Mallahan and Mcginn. People have a right to all of the information.

  • Whaa?

I’m not a big supporter of the mayor but this is pretty hard hitting. Nickels is going to win easy in both elections. He’s the only one who’s not a risk to vote for.

I laughed when I watched the hit piece. Don’t really think it’s nasty; it just points out one of his opponent’s biggest weaknesses.

@23 I disagree. I think that even more so it points out one of Nickels’ biggest weaknesses: that he is nervous that he won’t even make it past the primary. We all knew that he was going to get dirty at some point, I just don’t think that voters will buy into it as much as he hopes that they will. Particularly because this kind of behavior is to be expected from somebody as desperate and unscrupulous as Nickels.

The “jack” that we all know is that Tim Ceis actually runs the city…that is when Carr isn’t in charge from the litigation end. The question to all the candidates is who are they considering appointing for Deputy Mayor and who are they going to vote for City Attorney?

Those who crticize attacks should get out of the political business all together.

    1) McGinn has made his living on attacking the tunnel decision

    2) Mallahan…well I don’t think I need to explain that

    3) Drago …. recent move against Nickels/Bag Fee

    4) Donaldson …. pitchforks???

Josh you can attest that the politics that occur in Olympia are more of a Washington v. Seattle v. Frank Chopp atmosphere.

The problem, our Seattle delegation often does not have the political backbone to stand up to Chopp and Governor (i.e. Viaduct, Mass Transit, Gun Ban ..the list goes on and on).

Lets talk about how much attention Seattle will get from the Obama administration in Nickels is not there. You think good ole’ Joe or “No Tunnel” Mike McGinn can? And don’t give me the Joe was a community organizer for Obama speech. Who cares, so was my 80-year old grandmother and at least she made union approved Obama tshirts. Relationships in DC that bring dollars (EV, LEED) to Seattle just don’t happen they require leadership, networking and relationships.
