Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

New Larry Phillips Ad

King County Executive candiate Larry Phillips has released another TV ad spot.

wink

Watch it here.

The “future is so bright” is the phrase my friends and I utter to discreetly point out the d-bag that feels it necessary to wear shades indoors.

On that note, I heard Larry brag that he was voted least likely to be a d-bag politician in his senior poll.

It’s a somewhat bold effort at something beyond the typical, but I’m not sure the individual talking points really bring anything home for him; in fact, they all seem to raise questions that are probably troubling, at least a bit, to every constituency.

But, as a travel and tourism video, great! Let’s visit Seattle.

It’s amusing that Phillips is repping Safeco Field when in 2007 he apologized for his role in the 1995 vote to overrule the stadium vote saying he “deeply regret[s] it.” http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003572806_sonics15m.html

Maybe Phillips shouldn’t take credit for something has publicly apologized for???

  • FACT CHECK

Seems like Larry’s memory isn’t so good.

Two years ago he was “regretting” Safeco. Now, he’s doing photo ops in front of the stadium.

    Hmmm…somethings off here.

Since when is talking about how great we are here the same as taking credit for the accomplishments? Do people really think Larry is trying to say he made pyramid or wine personally?

Wasn’t it Dow and his staff who tried to take credit for saying things were awesome here?

I like the ad, i think it’s innovative and interesting. I wish more of the other candidates had interesting ads.

Note to ross: stop talking to camera it’s not compelling.

Note to dow: I’m not with you.

To Anon and Fact Check: I’m glad you both get to live with the luxury of never having changed your opinion on anything in life… sorry that Larry’s not as fortunate, but I’m happy that he now is proud of Safeco Field and I think his commercial is great.

Didn’t Sarah Palin register the political wink trademark. ;-)

Seriously, I really don’t wish Larry any ill but the person Larry is trying to portray in ad is kind of hard for me to reconcile what Larry’s like in person.

However, most voters won’t be burdened with my perspectives. It just might work.

Vote for Phillips b/c King County is great?? What?

This is an economic development promotional video — an awkward one at that — not a political ad.

Josh, it’s possible to post photos without making them hyperlinks. I think it makes people think they are supposed to click on the photo to see the video, which just leads to a bigger photo.

Constructive feedback only because I love all that you do.

Have you posted a video for Ross Hunter’s ads? I haven’t seen any, and I was surprised by your endorsement.

The Phillips ad doesn’t make me want to vote for him. I think he comes off as smarmy. Constantine is suddenly progessive, and a protege of Greg Nickels. Hunter is anti labor, Fred Jarret’s just plain odd, and Susan Hutchinson claims to be non partisan, despite her contributions to some of the most odious right wingers out there.
Stan Lippman’s been disbarred from practicing law. Lobdell has as much charisma as a brick. That leaves us with only one choice ,folks: It’s time to elect Goodspaceguy.

Lighten up on the ad, people.. sheesh. I personally like seeing an upbeat politician.

And I think the “comment of the day” could be taking what Larry said out of context from that 2007 Seattle Times article. And even if he does regret the situation, does that mean he can’t have pride for Safeco?

Thank about it folks, how big of a deal is that? Really?

It might work. The older voters might really like this style of cornball boosterism. If they ever see it. Maybe its running between the viagra ads on the network news.
