Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Seattle School Board Districts 5 & 7: PubliCola Picks Mary Bass and Betty Patu

smallpicks8

Voting for Seattle school board candidates in the 2009 election feels a bit like drafting players for the Sonics in the 2007 NBA lottery.

There’s a sense that this board won’t be around much longer. President Obama’s education secretary, Arne Duncan, has urged city governments to take over their local school boards, and one of this year’s mayoral candidates, Mike McGinn, has even made trusteeship part of his campaign stump speech, saying he will take over if Seattle schools don’t improve dramatically.

This is Seattle, so don’t expect anything to happen immediately. Still:The school board is entering an era of instability and unknowns. (A dramatic education reform bill just passed the state legislature this year as well, which means even more change.)

The pending turmoil is one reason we think it’s important to keep eight-year board veteran Mary Bass.

Bass, the board member who represents Capitol Hill and the Central Area, has a track record of diligence (she spotted the 2002 $34 million budget fiasco/”miscalculation” in her freshman year and stood up to then-schools superintendent Joseph Olchefske) and innovation (she’s enacted reforms to make board members and the superintendent more accessible to parents).

Moreover, in an overwhelmingly white city where the white north end is on the winning side of the achievement gap, Bass’ (sometimes maddening and elliptical) identity politics monolgues are necessary. There’s a reason key south end schools were spared (like Rainier Beach) during the closure nightmares.

Her opponent, Kay Smith-Blum, is energetic and well-informed. And she has a fat resume: As the CEO of the Butch Blum clothing boutique, she’s a successful businesswoman; and she’s proven herself as a longtime PTSA leader, establishing successful funding campaigns for Seattle schools.

However, with the radical changes and challenges on the way, this is no time to shelve someone with Bass’ institutional and budget smarts.

PubliCola picks Mary Bass.

The main race in the 7th District (Southeast Seattle) is between longtime parent activist and sometimes-strident blogger Charlie Mas and longtime public school counselor Betty Patu.

Patu’s experience as an intervention coordinator for failing 9th graders across the school district qualifies her in an invaluable way to take on the pressing problem of the district’s dropout rate, which is nearly 30 percent. At the programming level, Patu will now be able to bring her on-the-ground experience to make real changes that are relevant to students—practical experience that Mas lacks.

PubliCola picks Betty Patu.

Without some radical changes to the state constitution, the city can’t take over the schools. While more school accountability would be welcome, it’s unlikely to happen through city channels (nor should it). (This would be another example of McGinn, like Susan Hutchison, not knowing what is entailed in the job he’s applying for.) The school board is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Let’s make it as strong as we can.

That said, there are two other candidates in the 5th district as well. Did Publicola not interview them? I’d like as much information as possible to make an informed decision.

Mary Bass votes “no” on almost everything contentious, including every budget, and then calls herself a watchdog. She never contributes anything to the actual policy-making process — the “innovation” and “reforms” you mention are exactly what you say: more public meetings, not changes to the way our schools are run.

I know very little about her opponents, and I share her commitment to socioeconomic and racial equity, but I would never vote for Mary Bass. She makes people like us (lefties concerned with equality) look like clowns — remember when she participated in a lawsuit against the School Board?

The rationale for endorsing Mary Bass is tortured and silly. And the defense of “identity politics” is clumsy and embarrassing. Couldn’t you have just said she’s more in touch with the neighborhoods with schools in need of the most attention or something along those lines? Geez.

Despite your praise of Kay Smith-Blum’s experience, the following was used to justify your Bass endorsement:

“However, with the radical changes and challenges on the way, this is no time to shelve someone with Bass’ institutional and budget smarts.”

This same logic could just as easily be used to justify an endorsement for Mayor Nickels. Somehow, despite the radical challenges that are certainly in store for the Seattle, this reasoning wasn’t applied to the mayoral endorsement. After all, what good are “institutional and budget smarts” if they still lead you in the wrong direction? It appears that this was recognized in the mayoral endorsement, why not the school board?

Furthermore, your argument that Bass should be elected because she’s black is infuriating. I’m an African-American mother of a 7th grader. Bass’ budget and administrative policies have done NOTHING to improve the resource, opportunity, and achievement gaps in our community (including those “key south end schools” that you referenced), or improve the quality of education overall. And what good is served by keeping a school open if the education that the students are receiving in that school is inadequate?

Kay Smith-Blum has demonstrated the desire and ability to increase resources in the classroom and increase opportunities for our students, including south end schools. I think that you fell into a thought-trap that has ensnared many: elect someone who is black, and blacks and other disaffected populations will be helped. In reality, good ideas and action are necessary. Being black without those accomplishes nothing and being non-black with those can accomplish a great deal. So your suggestion that we should vote for someone who engages in “maddening and elliptical identity politics” while doing nothing to address the achievement gaps between north and south end schools in order to achieve some social justice goal is nonsensical. That makes as much sense as thinking the appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court is a civil rights victory because he’s black.

I intend to vote for one white woman who will improve education and equality for all of our students (including THOUSANDS of black students) than one black woman who won’t.

Mary Bass should be honored for her public service; however, she should not be reelected. Mary is ineffective and in 8 years does not have a lot to point at as initiatives she’s made happen that have helped SPS. She always listens and has big plans but they never materialize. It is very frustrating.

Also, there are two other candidates in the District 5 race; Andre Helmstetter and Joanna Cullen, both of whom are very bright and capable. I’d take either of them (but the nod to Andre) over Kay Smith-Blum who does not know the district well and already has developers lined up (she said in a forum) to create a new downtown school. Is that really what is needed now?

I would also disagree about Betty Patu and Charlie Mas (and you do a disservice to Wilson Chin who is bright and at least deserves notice as a candidate in District 7). Charlie knows the entire district which is not something Betty can claim. I’d take his institutional knowledge and smarts anytime.

As a candidate running for School Board Director for district 5 who was not contacted in this endorsement process, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Andre Helmstetter. I am the father of two young children, one of them a former TT Minor student who will be going to Leschi next year. I do not believe that our district, or the Seattle school district as a whole has been served well by our current representative. I invite you to check out my website “Andre For Schools!” to find out more about my campaign. Please take some time to read the CPPS questionnaire and look at the rest of the site. I would also like to extend an offer to the publishers of this blog to meet with me and talk about why I am running and to discuss my platform. I would also encourage you to reach out to the other candidate, Joanna Cullen, who is not mentioned in your article. I believe that informed decisions can only be made with a thorough understanding of all of our options. For anyone who has questions or comments, I can be reached at 206-579-7169, or andreforschools@gmail.com. I hope that in the future you will honor your journalistic privilege with thorough, thoughtful, coverage. Thank you for your time.

    Please consider Charlie Mas.

I’m a high school math teacher in Seattle, I’ve read many of Charlie’s diaries on
http://saveseattleschools.blogspot.com/ and he has nailed it with concrete ideas about getting kids up to speed / back to grade level.

    (Sorry I don’t have a url)

He’s diaried on a lot of other issues and he details the reasons behind his decisions. Even though I’ve worked for the district for 3 years, a lot of the non – math issues in the district just do NOT get my attention, so … oh well. There is only so much I can do, I already have a very involved job.

Betty Patu’s hands-on experience is wonderful, but it has nothing to do with the Board’s work. The Board should constrain itself to policy level concerns. The Board will not be charged with finding ways to reduce the drop-out rate, but directing the Superintendent to do so.

And, for what it is worth, key south-end schools, like Van Asselt, Meany, NOVA, the AAA, TT Minor, Lowell, and Thurgood Marshall, were NOT spared in the closure “nightmares”.

I can’t believe you endorsed Bass on the basis of racial tokenism and her ability to deliver “identity politics monologues”. I thought Politicola wanted to be taken seriously.

And it’s weird for a blogger to be sneering at another blogger (Mas) for his “stridency” — Charlie Mas has been studying the District, attending meetings, and asking tough questions of the administration for years now. He’s already a better public advocate than most of the Board members we have now.

Mary Bass has stayed in touch with the families and students of the community throughout her many years of service. Her community meetings have been enlightening and have clarified concerns of people throughout the district. She is an excellent policy analyst and has brought to light issues such as the fiscal fiasco of a previous administration and the importance of quality education for all students in all schools. She knows and understands the history of the district, both from her own experience and from growing up in the Bass family–some of the first Black principals in the SPS. This provides her with a rare perceptive quality that newcomers to the scene–those who have rarely, if ever, been involved with public education in Seattle cannot suddenly acquire.

Betty Patu has been working quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) within Seattle’s public schools for many years. She knows the ins and outs of district operations from her broad experience. She has testified at many school board meetings and followed the issues. Betty would be an effective board member, precisely because she has this extensive knowledge. She understands what works, what needs fixing, and what needs to go in order to go to provide quality education. Through her work Betty has developed a deep commitment to public education. It is one of her goals to make sure that every student succeeds. She not only knows our district, but she knows how to focus limited resources on teaching and learning, where they belong. She has done exactly that for many years. Betty Patu gets my vote!

Both Betty Patu and Mary Bass have a deeply rooted commitment to public education. Mary has fought against charter schools, school closures, and corporate profiteering in public education. Mary has stood firm in defense of public education in Seattle, which is threatened both overtly and covertly by “outside interests”, that wish to privatize our education system. Betty also views public schools as the great equalizer in a democracy. She has spent her professional career in public schools because she believes that all students deserve a high quality education, no matter where they live. This commitment to keeping public schools thriving and growing is essential for our day and age. With Mary and Betty on the board of Seattle Public Schools, we–the people–will have more voice in how our schools can best serve the community. Let’s build a board of people who really care about public education.

I don’t know if Publicola is going to make endorsements in school board races for the general election as well, but I think it would be appropriate for someone from Publicola to actually speak with the candidates prior to the endorsement decision.

I contacted Josh and asked if he had thirty minutes to speak with me, but I guess he didn’t. Instead, I got one quick question by email on an issue that wasn’t mentioned in the endorsement.

I don’t know if this is how Publicola did all of their endorsements – without speaking with the candidates – but I don’t think it is adequate. I think that Josh and Erica should aspire to doing better in the general election.

    FYI,
I spoke with Richard Conlin at a City Council Town Hall about the issue of the City taking over the district (as it has been brought up in the past by Mayor Nickels, Senator Murray and now Mike McGinn). Apparently, the Legislature could okay just one school district so you wouldn’t need to change either the state constitution nor have all districts in the state change.
