Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Seattle City Council Position No. 6: PubliCola Picks Nick Licata

smallpicks1

Nick Licata, a three-term incumbent who’s well liked by both his fellow city council members and the public, is the council’s most reliable advocate for open government and marginalized people, and against developer giveaways.

Opponents have long criticized Licata for being the lone “no” vote on high-profile issues. However, the things Licata votes against are frequently bad ideas and boondoggles. For example, Licata opposed the $50 million South Lake Union Streetcar, voted against the $200 million “Mercer Mess” fix, and voted against the controversial Woodland Park Zoo parking garage.

Moreover, Licata’s reputation as the “no” guy on the council isn’t entirely fair. Over the years, he’s learned to work with his political opponents to take bad legislation and make it better. For example, during his first term, Licata improved a library funding proposal that didn’t have support from the neighborhoods, resulting in new branch libraries in Northgate and South Park. In his second term, he brokered a master plan for the Arboretum between neighbors and advocates for park expansion. And he successfully changed the city’s arbitrary (and ultimately illegal) special events ordinance, strictly limiting the conditions under which parade permits can be reversed.

Licata’s never had a real challenger. This year, he has two—King County Parks administrator Jessie Israel and Planning Commission member Martin Kaplan. We like Israel, who raises some good issues about Licata—noting, for example, his opposition to proposals that would increase density around transit stops—but she hasn’t made a convincing case that Licata needs to go.

PubliCola picks Nick Licata.

  • Christi S

Licata is my pick! He’s been a stalwart on transparency and accountability and is a real leader on the council!

Yeah…You can vote for Nick for Position 4. I’ll vote for Jessie Israel for Position 6.

she hasn’t made a convincing case that Licata needs to go.

I’m voting for Jessie Israel, because I think she’s the better candidate. I don’t think a challenger needs to make a case that the incumbent “needs to go.”

If both Israel and Licata were running for their first terms, who would you endorse?

Right, Ben, because even Sound Transit supporters should bury their heads in the sand when they screw up.

Asking questions about a project doesn’t mean you oppose it, except in true-believer land.

Mr. X @5, Nick didn’t just “ask questions” about Sound Transit’s Link light rail, he actively worked with East Side and auto-centric opponents to kill the project.

Now that Link has successfully opened for riders, has anybody asked Nick what he thinks today, if he’s not glad the project went ahead in spite of his opposition?

Right Mr. X. Nick is a attack dog when it comes to Sound Transit, but was a lap dog when it came to asking tough questions about the Monorail.

Nick has never supported light rail and also wanted an elevated viaduct or a rebuild. I can’t vote for that.

Weak! “We choose Nick, but we really like Jessie too?”

Jessie Israel is the strongest candidate in this race.

There is clearly hesitancy to support the newcomer, but the truth is that she’s got more going for her than the incumbent.

It’s curious that Josh always asks why more women don’t run for office and then his orgs don’t endorse them. Israel is clearly the next generation of leaders and Nick has done all that he can do (which hasn’t been much the last few years, the lone ‘no’ vote aside doesn’t get much done)

I am also wondering of any ladies this year will be endorsed? or just enviro, white guys?

oh oh the gender card — Israel willing to pick upa foul on the way to the basket!

Yes, obviously publicola is the last bastion of male chauvinism! They’re just like the good old boys club with endorsing good old boys like Licata and McGinn. Damn those testicled ways! They should have endorsed corporate republican donating Sally Bagshaw! To prove they’re not sexist pigs.

Israel is the Tracy Flick of Seattle 2009, except she won’t win.

And if she’s the next generation of leaders we’re in trouble, because on her political resume you can look under “leadership” and you won’t find a single thing she was the leader on.

#11: I know you were talking to someone else, but I’m not affiliated with Jessie Israel’s campaign (besides planning on voting for her) and I think Publicola’s endorsement smells of chauvinism.

Endorsing the incumbent just because the challenger hasn’t made a convincing case that he “needs to go” is essentially saying that the minority with the vast majority of power (white men, in this case) should keep their disproportionate power until they screw up enough.

    I don’t buy that argument. I think:

    1) We should vote for candidates based on their merit, not because they have inherited their position of power, and:

    2) Part of that merit is being a member of an under-represented group with under-represented interests (such as women, LGBTI individuals, racial minorities, people with disabilities, etc.)

Based on the endorsement statement, Publicola doesn’t agree with this reasoning. They believe people in power should keep their power by default until they screw up enough, even if there is a challenger who might be even better.

Sally Bagshaw obviously shouldn’t be endorsed because she doesn’t qualify under #1. Jessie Israel does qualify, as Publicola admits.

It’s very disheartening. At least Friends of Seattle did endorse Jessie Israel, since they didn’t give Licata bonus points for being an incumbent. I’m especially surprised that Erica supported the reasoning in this endorsement (because of her past writing, not because of her gender).

I am voting for Jessie because I believe we face serious challenges in Seattle (ranging from population and growth pressures to transportation to environment to social services to keeping our city safe) and we need City Council members that are innovative, decisive and focused on getting the job done. Licata has been in office for 12 years and has not demonstrated that he can be an engine of good ideas or progress. 12 years on the job and he’s been against all sorts of things (including light rail). But what meaningful or substantial example progress can he point to actually being responsible for (meaning an initiative he actually thought of, advocated for and got passed into law)?

Jessie seems to think that she should be elected for being a woman alone, Just like Godden. That’s not really a surprise, since they both had the same Republican consultant running their campaign: Cathy Allen, who works to take out progressives and install moderate/conservative women who in many cases are hardly dems.

Jessie been a lap-dog for Nickels’ positions on a lot of things, and looked pretty uncomfortable at the fora where she was actually forced to take a stand.

Publicola got this endorsement dead-on, and ignored the lies that Jessie’s campaign has been attempting to smear Nick with (as evidenced on this page).

She’s going down to defeat, as she should for her sleazy campaign.

@17 Endorsements are funny. Nick was the first guy I ever saw biking around Seattle working on a campaign. That was 15 years ago. Perhaps the bicycle club has a short memory. Nick has always been a bit of an iconoclast and that hurts you when it comes to endorsements. On the other hand, who is he beholden to? The very fact that Jessie is running against Nick indicts her candidacy. We already have eight people on the council who tend to disagree with him. Why do we need another? Isn’t there enough group think going on in Seattle already?

I’m a woman and most women I know think that paying attention to gender in a political contest is stupid. I’m happy that it seems that Sotomayor will be on the Supreme Court for who she is, not that she’s a woman, and I think it’s discriminatory to contend that part of someone’s “merit” is their gender. Elected office is not an affirmative action situation.
