Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

McGinn Defines "Woonerf."

Earlier today , mayoral candidate Joe Mallahan defined a bit of his T-Mobile corporate jargon for us ("ideate").

Later in the day, mayoral candidate Mike McGinn defined "woonerf "—a Dutch word for a street (like in Pike Place Market) where pedestrians and bicyclists share the street with motorists.

At this, my transit wonk colleague Erica C. Barnett endorsed McGinn on the spot, while I continued to ask him if he had any agenda besides building Green communities and stopping the $4.2 billion tunnel.

"Don’t quote me on woonerf," McGinn fretted. "Am I going to be the arugula candidate now?"

woonerf

“Anybody gone to Seattle lately and see what they charge for a woonerf?” the candidate said. “I mean, they’re charging a lot of money for this stuff.”

    Woonerfs rule!

Seroiusly many of our little side streets don’t serve much traffic at all and it totally wouldn’t hurt to rip out the asphalt, install gravel and grass and bark, and let people walk all over, and say cars can enter if they creep along and live there, or are visiting. The overasphalting of everything is sickening.

IOW instead of installing sidewaks make the whole street a “plaza that accepts slow moving and cautious cars amongst the kids, the cats in the sun, the folks playing checkers.”

Pedestrian takeover of street space is great. We’re so generous, we’ll let nice cars in.

    But no Hummers!

If the picture had open ditches on both sides and no sidewalks it would more closely describe the other Seattle where I live.

I think McGinn is serving too much pie in the sky to win a general election. Unless he can toll new sidewalks and affordable housing he is going to have a hard time redirecting the “savings” from not doing the tunnel.

And, yes, it has been pretty clear that Eric has been in the bag for McGinn for a while.
