Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

David Bloom's Comment of the Day

bloom

David Bloom

City Council candidate David Bloom says he disagrees with Southeast Seattle neighborhood leader Pat Murakami (whose endorsement he’s touted) about the need to put more low-income housing in the neighborhoods.

Bloom, whose campaign has focused on expanding low-income housing (he wants to build 5,000 units over and above the housing levy’s goal of 10,000), says "any neighborhood can absorb more affordable housing, including Southeast Seattle."

Murakami famously fought a bill  in Olympia last session (using inflammatory speaking points )  that would have mandated low-income housing goals around light rail stations in Southeast Seattle.

"I disagree with Pat," Bloom told PubliCola, "but you can go through the list of names on my main opponent’s endorsement list and I’m sure you’ll find people she disagrees with."

He didn’t have an example, but of course, this whole discussion started yesterday when we reported that Bloom’s opponent, Sally Bagshaw (the two—along with, Dorsol Plants, are competing to fill Jan Drago’s open city council seat) got donations from anti-bike interests while getting a sole endorsement  from the Cascade Bicycle Club.

Bloom gets the last word: "The whole reason she got the CBC endorsement is because she agrees with them on the two-way Mercer plan. I don’t."  In addition to low-income housing, Bloom has criticized big-budget "sexy" projects, like the $200 million Mercer plan, for siphoning money away from basic needs.

We need that Mercer project so that the nearby condos will be more valuable. By putting $200 million into a 12 block area, we can achieve the dream of urban density, to help save the planet. Then the density will crawl outward from there, so that we can put sidewalks in in North Seattle by about the year 2885. But first things first, and these 12 blocks are where we have to start.

We don’t need to spend the money on the Mercer fix, but please people go down there and look: it’s office buildings and Lake Union Park. You just look stupid talking about non-existent condos.

I guess the next step is to ask Pat Murakami what she thinks about the plan.

There are lots of new condos in SLU if you go a couple of blocks east (and I think there are also more than a few up by Denny Way).

Personally, I thought 36th District Voter wins the “A Modest Proposal” irony award for the day….

Wait, so people support candidates and candidates accept support even when they don’t agree on everything?

    This is incredibly shocking.

A couple blocks east of Mercer??? Would that be on Capitol Hill then? There are lots of new apartment buildings in SLU, both market-rate and affordable (with income qualifications). Perhaps you’re thinking of those? One is “MercerView” (not Vulcan by the way).

There are lots of condos in Denny Triangle no where near Mercer, including Vulcan’s 2200 and 2201 Westlake (at Denny). Rollin St, also at that intersection, was going to be condos but didn’t sell enough so now it’s apartments. Technically the sole condo building in SLU is Veer at 9th and Harrison.

It is entirely possible that condos will be built somewhere near Mercer in the future, but there are none nearby right now (unless you consider the next neighborhood over “nearby” in which case there are plenty in Queen Anne and Eastlake as well).

I don’t think the Mercer project is a good use of limited funds (I’m a big fan of bike and pedestrian improvements personally) but honestly just go out to Lake Union Park next weekend and walk around. It’s a good way to spend a hot day and you’ll see what I mean. (The Parks is working on more trail around Lake Union right there, incidentally.)

IT’s this sort of anal nitpicking that makes any discussion in Seattle hopelessly protracted. I use the word “nearby”, clearly referring to the area, and rather obviously referring to FUTURE housing because the whole plan for SLU is NOT to have low rise auto sales lots and low rise marine supplies and low rise dusty antiques stores but to have yuppie condos as any idiot knows.

So some guy who actually supports the main point, that the Mercer prolject is not a good use of funds, gets in a dither because RIGHT NOW Mercer doesn’t have condos on it, and he’s “caught” me in a “mistake.” This sends him off in a tizzy of correction fervor when he dislikes Mercer as a use of limited funds and supports bike and ped improvements, which is EXACTLY the point I was making.

You know, it’s no wonder that Vulcan/developers/Nickels win everytime — on our own side people are so rabid about nit picky errors they can’t see the forest for the trees. “Oh wait he said ‘trees,’ don’t you know alders are techically not ‘trees,’ they are grasses, and also you’re being ecxlusionary and racial because you didn’t include bamboo, which everyone knows is also a grass, you should be sure to say you cant’ see the forest for the trees AND OTHER tall grasses and forms of vegetation, oh wait, we’d better list each and every one, okay you can’t see the forest for the alders, the aspens, the beeches, the conidfers the Douglas firs …………………………………..”

36th district voter, you’re absolutely right. Your original comment did say “nearby” and it’s my mistake.

I think I overreacted because of John Fox’s recent nonsense about “deflect traffic away from Paul Allen’s residential developments facing the lake along Valley Street.” As far as I know there are not even *plans* for that, though there is an Amazon office building project along Valley. Anyway, that’s no excuse to go off when as you said we agree on the goals.

p.s. You left out oaks and maples!

@5 – east of Westlake Ave. – by the fabulous old Russian-style church.

For someone who apparently has no idea what they’re talking about you’re certainly adamant.

…ahh, but I will amend my previous comment – those may well be luxury apartments rather than condos. Doesn’t really obviate the larger point, though…
