Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Extra Fizz: Sen. Murray Loses F-22 Fight in Senate

We’ve reported before on Sen. Patty Murray’s fight to preserve  funding for the F-22. (Boeing, a subcontractor on the plane, is Murray’s top contributor between 2005-2009 at $56,500.)

Today, thanks to a veto threat by President Obama , she lost in a 58-40 Senate vote which struck the F-22 funding.

Sen. Maria Cantwell joined Murray in voting Nay on Sen. Carl Levin’s (D-MI)  amendment to strip the $1.75 billion project out of the air force procurement budget.

So is this a win for America but a loss for Washington State? Should our senators be praised or scolded for how they voted?

There was a short story about this on Thom Hartmann’s show today…the Pentagon doesn’t want or need anymore planes at this time..they keep telling Congress “thanks but we dont have any need for more jets right now!” but Congresscritters like Murray, who like to stay in the good graces of the airplane bigwigs, continues to push for more contracts.

Sorry, but I’m a little more broadminded, Gabe G. If it’s a win for America, it’s a win for Washington State, at least long-term.

Our electeds who strive to “bring home the bacon” should at least make sure it’s bacon, something we can eat, and not just cuttings for the compost heap.

I’m so pleased with the Senate, and disappointed (again!) with my Senators.

Y’know, we could create jobs in this state by building massive concrete ziggurats and then tearing them down again. Whyn’t ya try running that up the flagpole, Patty?

PS: Hooray for Sec. Def. Gates, too, who has been quite vocal about this.

Now it just has to get through the House, right?
