Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Hutchison: Leading in July

Hutchison: Leading in July

According to the latest number crunching in the county exec’s race by obsessive county government watchdog Steve Finley, of the leading five candidates, King County Council member Larry Phillips has the most money on hand going into the August 18 primary, with nearly $192,000 available for that race.

Former KIRO anchor Susan Hutchison, however, has taken in the most money of any candidate in July so far, raising $33,645 in the last two weeks. And state Sen. Fred Jarrett continues to trail in fundraising, with just $37,905 available for the primary and only $4,100 raised in July so far. Complete June and July numbers below.

This is probably a 4 by vote, or those voting are those that vote all the time.

For curiosity, what does it cost to do a 4 by mailing in Seattle? And how do TV ads figure into the campaign? It would seem even the most prolific fund-raisers have to be money conscience.

Questions to ask those without the cash: how do they expect to make up for it or how are they making up for the disadvantage. Just thinking.

Not suprised to see Susan outpacing her opponents month after month. King County needs change and she’s the only one offering it.

She’s not offering change. She’s not offering anything. All she has is a pretty face, and she has been hiding it by refusing to show up at forums, afraid to say something that is not scripted for her.

King County does need change…But that doesn’t always mean that the most unqualified, inexpereinced candidate is the best means of change…

Why can’t experienced, capable and knowledgeable people promote change? I rather have someone who is that, rather than someone that doesn’t show up to things and reveal her right-wing extremism…

It seems then that Larry Phillips is the frontrunner in this race. Susan and Larry in the general will be an interesting race!
