Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Susan Hutchison's Nonannouncement Announcement

photo_susan A meeting with a city council member kept me away from Republican King County Executive candidate Susan Hutchison’s big press conference at Benaroya Hall this afternoon, but one of PubliCola’s team of reporters was on the scene. What follows is from his notes.

All of the four Democratic county executive candidates either crashed the conference (Larry Phillips and Dow Constantine) or sent representatives (Fred Jarrett and Ross Hunter). Asked why he had come to a competing candidate’s press conference, Phillips said, “This is the only chance I’ve had to speak with her!” Hutchison is famous for skipping campaign forums, especially Dem-friendly forums in Seattle.

Hutchison’s announcement—billed prior to the event as the unveiling of her “King County Budget Reform Initiative”—was a bit of a letdown: The big “announcement” was that Hutchison was appalled by the state auditor’s finding, released last month, that the county had failed to keep accurate records of county capital expenses, and that she would do better if elected. “These severe problems we face will not be solved by the same politicians who created them,” Hutchison said.

Within three months, she said, she would require each department to report back to her on its progress on the auditor’s recommendations. Additionally, she said, she would “develop protocols” to implement the recommendations, and “expand the resources available to the county auditor”—an interesting proposal from a candidate whose main campaign issue has been cutting the county budget.

Hutchison also proposed a countywide hiring freeze, said that if elected she would reduce the size of the county executive’s staff, and said she would drive her own car most of the time instead of being chauffered around by a county sheriff’s deputy.

Exactly what management experience does she have that would provide support for her claim that she could oversee capital expenditures better? This is essentially the basis of her stealth(we know its out there, we just can’t see it) campaign -make great sounding claims but no one will know if she is capable of backing them up.

NEVER elect people to office who believe that government can’t do anything right.

  • Danny Noonan

Anybody that reads this website knows that she’s grossly unqualified and would be dangerous as our Executive.

People need to get the word out or she might walk away with this thing!

@2 she has many of the EXACT same qualifications George Bush Jr. and Ronnie RayGun had:

    1. says what she’s told to say.
    2. isn’t competent.
    3. ignore #2.
    4. can be VERY convincing since she’s untroubled by what is true and what is a lie, see #1.
    5. competently delivers right wing lies and gets mouth breathers excited.

given the piss poor dim-o-cratic attempts to define her into the flat earth sand box she belongs in, in a perverse sense she deserves to beat many of them.

Hutchison’s strategy is working. She has showed up for some (not all) forums. She’s running like a candidate with great name recognition — which she has. In 2006 Cantwell used pretty much the same strategy in the general election. She sat on the sidelines, didn’t do interviews, and did one televised debate. That was the strategy she employed to win. And that’s what Hutchison is doing. The guys are simply frustrated. They can’t keep up.

Danny I agree completely. People need to know the incompetent, conservative ways of Hutchison. The media needs to step up and better point out her lack of qualifications in this race: as of now, her name recognition is winning the battle.

To counter your point seabos84: There are still a lot of liberals who (sadly/naively) will vote for Hutchison based on the fact that they “know her.” Her occupation as a former news anchor has given her a great advantage in this race, and trying to obliterate her name right now would not be the wisest position for any candidate: They may face the loss of potential votes. So instead of critiqueing their failed attempts to crush her into the “flat earth sand box she belongs in,” perhaps they are playing it smart, for the time being?
