Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Consider the Accomplishments

Sounders, 3rd place with 21 pts, 5-3-6

vs.

NY Red Bulls, tied for last in the league with 9 points, 2-10-3

First meeting, March 19, 2009, 3-0 victory for the Sounders

Papa Bear Kasey Keller is angry, and when the team’s oldest and most seasoned player talks, everyone should listen.

Keepers in general are only a last resort in defense; a really good defensive line shouldn’t even let a shot off. Losing a 3-1 lead is inexcusable.  (A lesson from Heading the Ball 101: Defensive heading is up and out; offensive/goal-scoring heading is down and over.  Please make a note of it Mr. Marshall.)

Yes. We’re undisciplined.  Yes, we have a lot to work on.  Yes, a team should never blow a 3-1 lead.  We have a long ways to go.

But being the positive guy I am, you must admit, we’ve come a long way for a four-month-old, new team.  Our goal—as I’ve stated before—is to learn from our mistakes now and continue to improve for the games that matter.

Consider the accomplishments on Wednesday: No red cards, no ejections, not even a yellow (that must be a first for us); we played with our starting 11, Fredy  ”made his comeback,”Alonso scored his first goal, King made an impressive, if not impossible, shot.

Now all we have to do is not score on ourselves.

Marked man.

Which should be easy to do today.  Our first game  against the Red Bulls (First! Game! Ever!) launched us into the league with a 3-0 victory.  Since then, the Red Bulls have firmly found their place safely at the bottom. Regardless, Colombian Juan Pablo Angel leads the club in goals, shots, and shots on goals.  He has 33 caps for his national side.  The assignment for our less-than perfect defense is to mark this guy and don’t let him score.

SIDE NOTE: MLS is conducting online voting  for the All-Star team that will face Everton FC, runners-up in the English FA Cup.  All of our starters are among the contenders. I broke down and stayed loyal to the team, voting Riley over Frankie Hejduk and  (reluctantly) for Montero over Brian McBride, leaving Ricardo Clark my sole non-Sounder selection, based on his performance on the US side against Honduras. Voting is limited to 10 votes per person, per day (how’s that for democracy?) so log on and skewer the process like only a city of techies can.

From the stands, Marshall’s own goal was extremely confusing. Nobody around me had any idea what had happened, even after watching the replay on the big screen. It was a depressing mistake, to say the least.

Everton’s goalkeeper, Tim Howard…is an American. Given that this is the MLS all-stars and not the national team (if it were up to me, the two mostly disparate entities would be aligned much closer – Bob Bradley selects more MLS players, even if they might not be as good as players in Europe, and voila! more of the best American players return to play in – duh! – America. And the cycle thus begins.), he’s going to play for them, right? (It’s kind of a dumb question, but its an interesting thought.) That’s not weird to think about at all, a potential Keller vs Howard goalie showdown deathmatch 8000.

  • Good Grief

Such a bummer of an outcome on Wednesday, but for a first year team they really are doing very well. It’s good to hear that Keller is on top of these things — from far away in the stands a lot of that stuff seemed true, but it’s always different down on the field. Hopefully they can get back on track and start playing more like the start of the season!

Not everyone is so sure the Sounders have what it takes to survive as a pro-sports team in Seattle. Of course, there are loud disagreements.

Way to pimp your other blog, NWDIGEST. Too bad it’s just regurgitating the same old brainless twaffle that all the other anti-soccer mouthbreathers have been vomiting up since time began. Your “points” are dull as crayolas. Maybe you should stay on the Eastside. The Sounders are kicking ass on the field and in the stands; they’re outdrawing the sad-sack Mariners, you know, with a payroll about 1/50th as high. Or you could, you know, take five minutes and educate yourself as to what’s happening, rather than whine about the many, many things you don’t understand.
