Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Cantwell, Murray Meet With Obama to Discuss Health Care

Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA) both attended a meeting yesterday with President Obama to discuss ways to keep down the cost of forthcoming health care legislation.

Obama reportedly asked Senators to find some of the revenue within the tax code, similar to his budget plan, in which he recommended a cap on itemized deductions. Cantwell, who has advocated for tax reform and hasn’t been a supporter of the deductions idea, has her own plan.

The Senator announced a bill today she put together with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), that would give out government incentives for primary-care physicians.

Cantwell’s main claim, which she made at a press conference in Yakima last week, is that an increase in primary-care physicians would put the emphasis on prevention and save money (Cantwell says about $55 billion) in the long run.

In the meeting, Obama went into the particulars of the plan with Senators on the Finance and Health Committees–including Cantwell and Murray–which will be drafting the initial legislation.

“The details of the bill are still being worked out and we’re hopeful to see something next week,” Murray spokeswoman Alex Glass told PubliCola, declining to go into specifics about what kind of funding proposals Murray supports for the legislation

Let’s just hope that this time our Senators stand with the President and their constituents in support of a public option in any reform plan. I hope to never again see my Senators behave as disgracefully as they did in that recent 92-6 bullshit vote to deny the funds to close Gitmo.
