Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Vigil at Cal Anderson Park for Dr. George Tiller

In this morning’s Morning Fizz we said Planned Parenthood was holding a vigil for Dr. George Tiller tonight. Tiller, a doctor in Kansas who performed late-term abortions, was murdered at his church on Sunday.

We didn’t have the details on the vigil this morning. Planned Parenthood just sent them out:

Vigil tonight at 6pm in Seattle, Cal Anderson Park

The entire Planned Parenthood family is deeply saddened by the murder of Dr. George Tiller. He was a respected, loved member of our community and his loss is felt by all of us.

There will be a vigil, today, Monday, June 1st at 6pm at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle, to offer our thoughts and prayers to his family and those close to him who are suffering a personal tragedy. Cal Anderson Park is located at 1635 11th Ave, Seattle in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

“Dr. George Tiller was committed to providing women vital health care in the most adverse conditions. He was a compassionate doctor whose dedication and courage was unsurpassed,” said Elaine Rose, CEO, Planned Parenthood VOTES! Washington.  “This is a tragedy for his family and those close to him – and also for our nation.”

Dr. Tiller was the epitome of a high quality medical care provider underscored by deep compassion for his patients. He provided critical reproductive health care services, including abortion services to women, while facing some of the most difficult medical circumstances. He was continually harassed by abortion opponents for much of his career – his clinic was burned down, he was shot by a health center protestor and seriously injured, and he was recently targeted for investigation only to be acquitted by a jury just a few months ago. None of this violence and intimidation stopped George Tiller from his commitment to providing women and their families with compassionate health care that others were unwilling to offer. His death is an enormous loss for his family, the patients who relied on him, his dedicated staff, the medical community, and for women and their families across America.

We hope that you can join us today, Monday, June 1st at 6pm at Cal Anderson Park.
