Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Drago Update

The Seattle Times is reporting that City  Council Member Jan Drago will finally make her run for mayor official on Tuesday outside the Seattle Art Museum.

Update: And Drago’s consultant Blair Butterworth tells PubliCola that indeed, Drago will “have an announcement” at 12:30 on Tuesday afternoon outside SAM.

The question that’s dogging Drago among political insiders (know-it-alls) and journalists is this: How does Drago, who has largely been in lockstep with Nickels’ signature issues—the tunnel, South Lake Union redevelopment, Northgate redevelopment, alcohol impact areas, the downtown heights rezone, stricter club rules, the streetcar, and lifting the U. District lease lid—differentiate herself from Nickels?

Given Nickels’ dreadful poll numbers, however, the answer—for the general pubic—might be simple enough:  She’s not Greg Nickels.

YAWN! Wow … and exciting interesting

    YAWN … Blair But-But-Butt-Don’t-Do-Nothing-Or-We’ll-Scare-The-Middle-And-Lose!

let me guess … she’s gonna be the change candidate!

in my mind I’m seeing ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’ and Pappy O’Daniel.

for a city filled with don’t rock the boat follow the herd sheep who think they’re cutting edge, drago is a great fit.

    rmm.

For some reason, calling us “the general pubic” seems awkwardly appropriate.

I am not amused. Great ‘opportunity’ for her.

  • Nickels looks better and bette

Jan Drago has two huge weaknesses:

    1) She has no personality.

    2) She has been virtually inaccessible to neighborhoods for years. She seems to make lots of time for business lobbyists (check out the Council visitor logs), but she never attends neighborhood events, never returns calls, never returns e-mails and generally tells normal people to go take a hike. Nickels, on the other hand, is always present in the community and his staff does actually respond to citizens – graciously.

    More Weaknesses:

    3)She lacks executive experience.

4)She lacks good judgment. Remember that toilet fiasco? The P-I dubbed her the “potty queen.”

5)She’s already in retirement mode and has coasted this past year, as this post attests:

Worst of all, for years she’s been desperately trying (and failing) for years to cover up the fact that she’s an ogre:

    http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20040330&slug=budget30m

“This isn’t fun, and it sure doesn’t help to hear hoots and hollers and be made to feel like an ogre,” Drago said.

And yet despite her ogre-like personality, she has failed to show leadership on pretty much any issue, pretty much forever. I can’t stand Nickels, but at least I know what kinds of policies he’ll pursue (for better or worse). What does Jan Drago stand for? Besides “not” being an ogre, that is.

    I love you guys.

    Potty Queen. Drago the Ogre.

Everyone within 50 feet of me is now staring…

Kathryn, Joe’s gotta be putting up some policy stuff soon. Of course, there’s nothing better than talking to him face-to-face so keep your eyes open for an event calender.
