Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Gun Stun

nerd7Despite living in the U.S. my entire life—including a four-year stint in the Midwest—I had never, not once, ever touched a gun until last week.

I’m terrified of them. Everyone talks about how the  media desensitizes kids to violence, but I think growing up on Terminator and True Lies made me more wary of guns: If there’s one in the room, it means SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE. I still can’t wrap my head around why it’s acceptable for someone to walk into a store and buy a semi-automatic any day of the week.

Last week, I was trolling around pawn shops in the rough part of town interviewing people for a freelance assigment about how the recession has affected business. Hawker’s Lockers is next to a derelict parking lot and a chain link fence lined with razor wire. After I toured the back of the store where guitars were stacked like pancakes, the chatty young woman behind the counter, Cassie, started talking to me about guns. She loves them.

While some reports say gun sales spiked dramatically around the Obama election, the Hawkers Lockers workers say they haven’t noticed any big increase. “A few weeks ago, though,” Cassie told me, “I was at Dutch brothers and the coffee guy started asking me about where I work.” (She told him about the pawn shop, and obviously, the guns.) “He said he wanted to buy a gun before the ‘Barackolypse’!”

I asked Cassie to show me her favorite gun in the store. The walls and counters were lined with rifles and handguns, but Cassie headed straight to the back and brought out a $1200 semi-automatic Bushmaster. “I was that little redneck girl who just liked guns,” she explained, looking over the huge gun and then handing it to me. Oh geez.

“Can this be like a hunting gun?” I asked. Cassie and the other worker, an older guy named William, laughed. “That’s not an animal gun!” William said.

“What’s the totally legitimate, non-gang-banger reason for owning one of these?” I asked, my finger on the trigger.

Cassie shrugged. “There isn’t one.”

The pair got a kick out of my gun jitters and a minute later, I looked up and William was aiming a fancy sniper gun at me—a red laser sight beam dancing over my sweater.

“You see that dot on you?” William laughed. Very funny.

    Precisely.

Holy fucking shit. The very first thing you learn in any gun safety class is that every gun is assumed to be loaded, and that you never point it at anything you don’t want to destroy. “We were just kidding around in the gun store, and we accidentally blew away this cute reporter…”

Next week nerdnerd go over to the VA hospital and have a seat near the door and watch the young men coming and going. Notice the amputations and the mutilations. Then you will understand why in the Army when a young man calls his weapon a gun he is told to hold his assault rifle in the air and chant “this is my weapon” then grab his crotch and chant “this is my gun” and then the rifle “this is for killing” and then the crotch “this is for fun.”

You see nerdnerd, hammers are made for pounding nails. Screwdrivers are made for screwing screws, Guns (weapons)are made for killing. And that Bushmaster is made for killing people. And as Uncle Vinny points out that girl is a fucking idiot.

Well rifles very similar to that bushmaster are fairly popular for target shooting (which is a legitimate non-gangbanger reason for having one). Though to be fair one useful for target shooting will have a fixed stock and a longer barrel.

“In Pittsburgh today, a gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on police officers who were responding to a domestic disturbance call, killing three of them. Many bloggers have noted that the shooter, 23-year old Richard Poplawski, irrationally feared for “the Obama gun ban that’s on the way” and “didn’t like our rights being infringed upon.””

In last month, mass shootings claim 53 lives

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A string of shootings in the U.S. in the last month alone has claimed the lives of 53 people:

-MARCH 10, SAMSON, Ala. – A gunman kills 10 people and commits suicide in a rampage that spanned two dozen miles across the southern Alabama countryside. Police say Michael McLendon had struggled to keep a job and left behind lists of employers and co-workers he believed had wronged him.

-MARCH 22, OAKLAND, Calif. – A man pulled over in a routine traffic stop fatally shoots two officers and then kills two more in a gunfight in which the suspect was also killed. Relatives say Lovelle Mixon, 26, had been frustrated about not finding work and feared returning to jail.

-MARCH 29, SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A man shoots and kills his two children and three other relatives, then kills himself at a family housewarming party in an upscale neighborhood. Investigators don’t yet know the motive of Devan Kalathat, a 42-year-old engineer at Yahoo.

-MARCH 29, CARTHAGE, N.C. – A man opens fire in a nursing home and kills seven elderly residents and a nurse who cared for them. Investigators say Robert Stewart, 45, apparently had targeted an estranged wife, a nurse’s assistant who escaped by hiding in a bathroom.

-APRIL 3, BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A gunman bursts into an immigrant center and kills 13 people before killing himself. Police say Jiverly Wong, a 41-year-old Vietnamese immigrant, was apparently upset about losing his job and about people picking on him for his limited English.

-APRIL 4, PITTSBURGH – A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opens fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call, killing three of them. Police say Richard Poplawski, 23, had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

-APRIL 4, GRAHAM, Wash. – A man fatally shoots his five children in their mobile home and then takes his own life in his car miles away. Relatives identified the father as James Harrison. A motive was not yet known.

Sarah, I’ve been on this planet at least twice as many years as you have, and I remain a firearms-virgin (unless you count cap pistols and potato guns). And I spent 6 years in Kentucky, 9 years in “Live Free Or Die” New Hampshire, and 15 years living within a couple of miles of Richard Poplawski’s home.

I fully intend to live my entire life without ever touching — much less holding or, god forbid, firing — a “weapon” of any kind.

I share your revulsion. I’m sorry that you gave in to the evil, even for just a moment.

Don’t you get it N in Seattle? This is guns as a fashion accessory. If a few people have to die now and then for little Cassie and other redneck girls to be cool-so be it.

Yeah, Greg, I’m as unfashionable as I’m ungunned. Not big on accessorizing.

There’s so very, very much that I don’t “get”. Thankfully…

A weapon like that can certainly be used for defense as well as recreation. There is nothing sinister or unethical about using this pistol for plinking (recreation) or as Chris Stefan suggested, target practice (recreation). Also, as Uncle Vinny suggested, all weapons are always loaded and should be treated as such. As a gun owner I am truly disgusted by the example that Cassie and William (the workers at the shop) portrayed. Cassie comes off as an idiot county bumpkin (no offense intended to all other non-idiot country bumpkins) but William is without doubt a complete tool and deserves a SEVERE BEATDOWN for pointing a gun at nerdnerd (Seriously, I wouldn’t argue with legal action being taken against William). Guns are not toys William. Joking aside, you never point a gun at anybody unless in fear for your life or the life of somebody in your care. EVER.
Guns themselves aren’t evil, but they can be used by evil and mentally disturbed people (i.e. most if not all of the people listed in the 6th response) to cause horrible destruction. Obviously that is a whole subject unto itself

Guns aren’t for everyone, and that’s OK, but I would like to think that if people were shown how to safely use them, many of the misunderstandings regarding firearms could be dispelled and it would change the discussion about guns in our country.

the rifle you see there is a keltec su-16d it has a 12 inch barrell which is not legal unless it is registered as a short barreled rifle, you must file paper with the atf wait a long time give them all your finger prints a caseing fired from the gun, dont say anything about my spelling, it amuses me how little you people actually know about buying a gun, its people like you who take what the media feeds you, the person who pointed thatt gun at you is an idiot, a semi auto is no different then a rwegular rifle one bullet for each pull of the trigger, the 2nd aadmenment is the most important one because it protects all the others
